A First Vegan Anniversary

Dear Readers,

Whether you’ve joined my journey from this site’s beginnings or encounter me here today, I extend to you my utmost gratitude.

I remember my initial beliefs of veganism; indeed, it was something I could never do, excluding all my favorite foods. And cheese? Yeah, maybe this choice isn’t for me. Nevertheless, I find myself weighing the choice: do I cave or listen to that voice? Feeling bold and empowered, I take that plunge.

Initially, my veganism consisted of blueberry belvita bars and orgain vanilla shakes. Little to my knowledge, orgain shakes widely boast a “grass-fed” label; this wasn’t plant-based. My vegan efforts quickly grew sour. But would I let them? Maybe this is the choice for me.

Now, 365 days older, I can say it never gets easier, but you find your knack for it. For me, veganism shapeshifted from an idealistic “diet” to a sustainable, unrestrictive lifestyle by which I could forever live. Contrary to popular belief, veganism is not a vehicle to slash our calories, achieve that idealistic figure, or attain serenity. Instead, it is a choice, a choice grounded in the values by which you live.

In my utmost opinion, veganism is a choice, an unpopular road by which to venture. Is that ok? Absolutely. Although veganism is an exciting thing about me, resonating with my values, I don’t identify with its label. I love to advocate for animals, but the woman I am beneath is not to be forgotten. Many activists confuse their bodies for vehicles directing change, but we must find ourselves for who we are.

In my 365 days, seventeen years of life, I have learned that I am more than my activism, and beneath my activism is a woman of admirable strength, curiosity, and character. These qualities enable me to fight for the values by which I truly believe. Collectively, my veganism, love for Strawberry Dunkin Refreshers, blue period works from Picasso, and mid-afternoon jogs, make me uniquely Jessica, enabling me to reach impossibly new heights.

Here I stand, without a moment to spare; I can’t wait for the years ahead.

Best wishes,

Jessica
